Ingredients

  • Cooking spray or butter for greasing
  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats or steel-cut oats 180g
  • 4 cups water 960ml
  • 3 cups milk 720ml
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar 55g
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup 30ml
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Grease the insert of a 4-quart or larger slow cooker with cooking spray or butter.
  • Add the oats, water, milk, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt to the slow cooker.
  • Stir all the ingredients together until they are well combined.
  • Cover the slow cooker and cook on the LOW setting for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
  • Check the oatmeal near the end of the cooking time. It is ready when the oats are tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  • Stir the oatmeal well before serving. It will continue to thicken as it stands.

Notes

To prevent sticking, be sure to grease the slow cooker insert generously. A disposable slow cooker liner also works well for easy cleanup.
Cooking times can vary between slow cooker models. Check your oatmeal at the 2-hour mark to see how it is progressing.
Adjust the sweetness to your preference. You can use more or less brown sugar or maple syrup.
